World Cup Golden Boot Betting Tips

By Mark_S on February 10, 2010

The golden boot or golden shoe, if you prefer, is awarded to the player that scores the most goals at the World Cup Finals. This is one of the most popular betting markets ahead of the World Cup and here are our tips for choosing who to bet on.

GOLDEN SHOE BETTING TIPS : PICKING A WINNER

It is only when reviewing the complete list of contenders for top goalscorer in the 2010 World Cup that you realise just how many great strikers are out there. This makes it even more tricky to tip potential Golden Boot winners.

Top Goalscorers : How Many Goals Are Needed

Below are the top goalscorers for the last six World Cup finals along with number of goals scored and where their team finished in the competition.

Year Player Team Goals Finished
1986 Gary Lineker England 6 Quarter Finals
1990 Salvatore Schillaci Italy 6 Semi Finals
1994 Oleg Salenko =

Hristo Stoichkov =

Russia
Bulgaria

First Round
Semi Finals
1998 Davor Suker Croatia 6 Semi Finals
2002 Ronaldo Brazil 8 Winners
2006 Miroslav Klose Germany 5 Semi Finals

Ideally you should be looking to bet on your top goalscorer from among the team likely to reach the Semi-Finals of the competition.

However, a secondary consideration is how easily beatable are the teams in the Group stages. If there are some very weak teams in a Group, then a top class striker can probably have as many as 3 or 4 goals before the group stages are even over.

WORLD CUP TOP GOALSCORER TIPS

There are two groups from where the quality of opposition suggests that a golden boot winner could emerge. These are Group B featuring England and Group H featuring Spain.

Both England’s Wayne Rooney and Spain’s David Villa have been in great form both in qualifying and domestically and both sides are likely to score freely against some of their Group opposition.

So my money is on Rooney and Villa to be among the World Cup 2010 Golden Shoe winners.

BEST ODDS ON WAYNE ROONEY : 14/1 at Stan James

BEST ODDS ON DAVID VILLA : 11/1 at Bet365

  1. [...] However, all is not lost for England as – in Wayne Rooney – they have a striker of genuine class and one who could well end up golden boot winner. [...]
