OK, today sees the beginning of Spain’s World Cup campaign with what should be a fairly straightforward match with Switzerland. Elsewhere, Chile face Honduras and South Africa come up against Uruguay and it is with this last one that I’ll start my World Cup betting tips for today.
SOUTH AFRICA v URUGUAY BETTING TIPS : JUNE 16th 19:30 GMT
South Africa were actually fairly impressive in their opening match against Mexico, so expect them to be full of confidence going into this evening’s match with Uruguay.
The word to describe Uruguay’s 0-0 draw with France must surely be: dogged. But, really, Uruguay are better than that. They do have skill and guile and I fully expect them to show it against Bafana Bafana.
I had thought that Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan would prove more effective against France than they were, with Suarez in particular being caught offside far too often. However, the match against South Africa will show that this is a strike partnership to be feared. I don’t think the likes of South African centre backs Mokoena and Thwala will be able to shackle them.
South Africa really don’t have much attacking quality and if Uruguay can put in the same level of defensive performance as they did against France, they will win to nil.

SPAIN vs SWITZERLAND BETTING TIPS: JUNE 16th 15:00 GMT
Thus far – Germany and Argentina excepted – the big nations have underperformed at the 2010 World Cup. Nevertheless, I’m backing Spain to put that right.
Spain have few injury concerns ahead of this match, with Andres Iniesta winning the battle to be fit in time for Spain’s opening match. Even if Iniesta doesn’t start, Cesc Fabregas is a more than able deputy. It is this strength in depth that gives me confidence that Spain will do well at the 2010 World Cup Finals and they should roll over a Switzerland side who are without key players like striker Alexandre Frei and West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami.
Switzerland, don’t forget, came through possibly the weakest European qualifying group (their group included Greece, Latvia and Israel). They even lost at home to Luxemborg and drew twice with Israel. Let’s be honest: Switzerland are not a good team.
